The most extensive and helpful naming resource that I’ve been able to find so far is called “Behind the Name”  It breaks down names by origin, and also has lists of historically popular names.  It also includes more “modern” versions of some names.

is the Writer’s Forensic Blog by D.P. Lyle, MD.  I came across it after reading one of his books last year, called “Murder and Mayhem.”  It didn’t have exactly the information I was looking for at the time, but I really like how he explains forensics with the writer in mind.

Oh, and he does highlight interesting “real world” cases on his blog, too.  So it can be a great idea generator as well as a source for information.
